Will TripAdvisor Remove Bad Reviews? How To Eliminate Negative Reviews on TripAdvisor?
How To Eliminate Negative Reviews
If you own a small hotel or vacation rental and are wondering “How to eliminate negative reviews,” I am about to save you loads of time.My properties were some of TripAdvisor’s first paid business listings ever.
I’m also one of the first (and maybe only?) columnist for TripAdvisor on the subject of small hotel and vacation rental marketing (you can read my posts here).
That is to say that tracking back over the past few years, I’ve come to know their inner workings (as it relates to negative reviews) fairly intimately.
When Can You NOT Eliminate Negative Reviews?
TripAdvisor has come under fire of late for permitting less-than-authentic reviews into the marketplace…
Many of us have also been victim of an unusually picky guest or downright criminal trying to blackmail us using negative reviews.
While it’s good to keep all documentation for these types of guests (who knows when TripAdvisor will open up better options in this department) it’s incredibly hard to get these negative reviews removed.
I’m saving you a lot of time by saying that unless your case is EXCEPTIONAL, chances are, you will not get that lemon removed.
How To Cope With Negative Reviews
The best way that I recommend most owners deal with negative reviews is to bury them.
This means simply inundating your account with as many positive reviews as humanly possible.
While the negative review WILL indeed affect your Popularity Index Score, most travelers discount the extremities of any given property reviews:
That is to say that if a negative review is out of sight, it’s oftentimes out of mind.
How To Eliminate Negative Reviews
If you have a negative review and you want it eliminated, there are really only two options you’re considering, yet neither is nearly as straightforward as you might hope.
1) Reviewer Eliminated Review
There is a fairly simple process by which, if a reviewer posts a review, he or she can log-in and eliminate that review from the records.
This function is designed for accidents (those who give 1 star instead of 5) as well as converts (those who realize their negative review wasn’t warranted and want to eliminate it).
Of course, this requires the consent of the reviewer and only really applies to a small handful of the potential negative reviews you’ll receive.
But that’s not to say that it’s not possible.
For instance, when I get a negative review, I contact the reviewer personally (you can do this by clicking on their username and messaging them through the TripAdvisor interface), engage in respectful and constructive dialogue with them and ultimately – when the time is right – as them to take down the negative review.
This has worked for me successfully about half the time.
2) Change Of Ownership
This is a more sophisticated way of eliminating negative reviews:
To request a “change of ownership” of the property and effectively eliminate every single review (both good and bad) fill out this form:

Of course, this, when successfully done, means that you’ll be eliminating you’re entire history: the baby with the proverbial bath water.
This additional downside is that this solution takes time as a TripAdvisor rep will likely tackle your case individually.
But for those who absolutely positively cannot live with some particular negative review(s), this might be a good option assuming you can provide relevant paperwork.
Conclusion
In short, eliminating negative reviews is one of the more annoying and challenging aspects of owning a TripAdvisor business listing.
If you have a business listing, you probably have a TripAdvisor representative tied to your account.
Try connecting with them to get this information first hand.
Because you never know when the rules might change…
And considering all the negative backlash TripAdvisor is facing over fraudulent reviews, I have a feeling it may change sooner rather than later.
